The TV Room: Object of Ire, or Something to Celebrate?

The TV Room: Object of Ire, or Something to Celebrate?

Afshan Behnamghader

Often in the design industry, people simply don't know how to deal with the TV, especially when it comes to larger screens. Some designers don't talk about them at all, others leave them out of their portfolios entirely, and many try to hide or dismiss them as undesirable objects.

However, the TV isn't going anywhere. It is here, it has been here, and it will continue to be a central part of how we live.

So I suggest making peace with it and celebrating it alongside the rest of your home. Instead of trying to disguise it, surround the TV with items that bring warmth and life. This can mean many things, including cluster books, textiles, patterns, vintage plates, and lush plants. The softness, organic shapes, and textures of these surrounding objects ease the dark weight of the screen, helping the TV blend naturally into the room rather than standing out like a black box.

A modern, well-lit living room with light wood floors, a large terracotta-colored rug, a dark wood console with a black television, and a potted plant.

When you treat the TV as just one layer among many, it stops feeling like an eyesore and starts feeling like a natural part of a lived-in space.

Please note that these 3D renderings are created using Revit, Enscape, Photoshop, and AI tools as representative studies for layout, scale, overall feel, and concept. They cannot fully capture the true depth, texture, and nuanced beauty of objects, materials and finishes. I always recommend visiting the manufacturer's website or ordering physical samples before making a final decision.
